In the 1988 Seoul Games, the Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson won the 100-meter race, and also set a world record in the same. But later in a drug test, he was found to have taken steroids in order to win the race. Though he said he had used the steroids only during training, and only because he wanted to keep up with his opponents, he was disqualified from the race. He was also stripped of his medal as well as his world record honors, and the medal was given to the second place holder – Carl Lewis. He also admitted later that he had used steroids when he made a world record in 1987. This resulted in his previous record being taken away from him as well.
Steroid isolation , depending on context, is the isolation of chemical matter required for chemical structure elucidation, derivitzation or degradation chemistry, biological testing, and other research needs (generally milligrams to grams, but often more  or the isolation of "analytical quantities" of the substance of interest (where the focus is on identifying and quantifying the substance (for example, in biological tissue or fluid). The amount isolated depends on the analytical method, but is generally less than one microgram. In both cases, the isolated substance is purified to chemical homogeneity; combined separation and analytical methods, such as LC-MS , are chosen to be "orthogonal"—achieving their separations based on distinct modes of interaction between substance and isolating matrix—to detect a single species in the pure sample.
